The memorial located at the old main gate of RAF Balderton has been desecrated by old tyres and other rubbish. The memorial was unveiled on the Great North Road (B6326) on the 31 August 2019. OS Grid Ref: SK 82574 49445
The inscriptionI on the memorial is as follows: IN MEMORY OF/ BALDERTON AIRFIELD/ OPENED 14.06.1941/ CLOSED 31.08.1954/ DEDICATED TO ALL UNITS/ AND PERSONNEL BASED HERE/ AIRFIELDS/ OF BRITAIN/ CONSERVATION TRUST/ WWW.ABCT.ORG.UK/ UNVEILED BY/ KENNETH P. BANNERMAN/ DIRECTOR GENERAL, ABCT/ and/ RAF BALDERTON RESEARCH GROUP/ KEEPING RAF BALDERTON/ MEMORIES ALIVE/ 31.08.2019
Over the last 4 years or so, I have collected upwards of 200 bags of rubbish on this road and on Shire Lane and I am truly disappointed anyone would do this. In this specific area I have bagged hundreds of beer cans and other detritus.
I sincerely hope Newark & Sherwood Council get on with it and remove the tyres as they desecrate this fine memorial.
NB: As a point of interest the site of the memorial is deteriorating. The gates are no longer locked and the fence behind it is now broken.
