Dear Secretary of State,
I am writing to express my serious concern about the continued delay to the Defence Review and the wider impression that the Government is failing to demonstrate a credible long‑term commitment to the defence of the United Kingdom.
At a time of increasing global instability, clarity in defence planning is essential. Yet the repeated postponement of the Defence Review has created uncertainty for the Armed Forces, industry, and the public. This delay is particularly troubling given the number of major procurement programmes already suffering from significant slippage, cost escalation, or capability reductions.
To be specific:
- Ajax remains years behind schedule, with persistent noise and vibration issues leaving the Army without the modern reconnaissance capability it was promised.
- E‑7 Wedgetail, originally intended to replace the retired Sentry fleet, has been cut from five aircraft to three and delayed further, leaving a critical gap in airborne early warning.
- Type 26 frigates, essential for anti‑submarine warfare, are progressing far more slowly than originally planned, with the first ship still years from operational service.
- Type 31 frigates, intended as a rapid, affordable general‑purpose platform, have also slipped, raising concerns about whether the Royal Navy will face a capability dip as older vessels retire.
- Challenger 3, while a welcome upgrade, will not deliver at scale until the 2030s, leaving the Army with a limited number of modernised tanks during a period of heightened armoured warfare in Europe.
These delays are not isolated issues. They form a pattern that suggests a lack of strategic urgency and a failure to align procurement, funding, and operational requirements. Without a timely and properly funded Defence Review, the Armed Forces cannot plan effectively, industry cannot invest with confidence, and the UK risks falling further behind its stated ambitions.
I would be grateful if you could set out:
- The reasons for the continued delay to the Defence Review
- When the Government now intends to publish it
- What steps are being taken to address the delays and capability gaps in the programmes listed above
- How the Government intends to ensure that the Armed Forces receive the resources, equipment, and strategic clarity they urgently need
The men and women who serve this country deserve more than uncertainty and repeated deferrals. They deserve a Government that is fully committed to delivering the capabilities required to meet the threats of the coming decades.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to your response.
Yours sincerely,
